What We Build

Railings Made to Measure

The position and purpose of your railings shape the design. We make short and tall sections, from decorative wall-top panels to railings around raised areas.

Balcony Railings

Made-to-measure metal railings for balconies, with the layout developed around the space and the building. We consider the required design specification alongside the appearance of the metalwork.

Veranda Railings

Railings to define the edge of a veranda and complement its supporting posts and surrounding architecture. Sections can be designed around entrances and changes in direction.

Platform Railings

Railings for raised platforms at domestic and commercial properties. The layout needs to account for access points, the supporting structure and how the area will be used.

Wall-Top Railings

Metal railings fitted above boundary or garden walls. We consider the width and condition of the wall, the fixing arrangement and how the railings will sit between any piers.

Decorative Railings

Ornamental metalwork with details such as scrolls, finials and shaped panels. Bring a reference photograph or discuss a design that relates to other features on your property.

Traditional and Period Designs

Railings with proportions and detailing suited to older buildings. We can discuss matching the character of existing ironwork or developing a design for a period setting.

What We Use

Materials and Finishes

The material and finish influence the appearance of the railings and the care they need. We discuss the options with you, taking account of the location and the style of the property.

Mild Steel

Mild steel can be fabricated into simple railing panels or more detailed designs. The choice of sections and protective finish will depend on the intended use and setting.

Simple or detailed

Decorative Metalwork

Traditional wrought iron-style detailing can be incorporated into bespoke railings. We discuss the actual material specification as well as the appearance, particularly where new work sits beside older ironwork.

Traditional styling

Galvanising

Galvanising is one of the protective treatments available for exterior steelwork. It can be considered as part of the finish specification for railings exposed to the weather.

Exterior protection

Paint and Powder Coating

Powder coating and hand painting offer options for the colour and appearance of the finished railings. Surface preparation and any protective treatment are discussed alongside the chosen finish.

Designing Your Railings

A railing needs to suit the space it encloses and the surface it fixes to. We work through these details with you before making the metalwork.

Height and Proportions

The height and spacing of the metalwork need to suit its purpose. We discuss the project requirements during design, particularly where railings enclose a balcony or other raised area.

Posts and Fixings

The supporting surface is part of the design. Photographs and a site visit help us assess the proposed fixing locations and identify details that need resolving before fabrication.

Corners and Changes in Level

A run of railings may need to turn a corner or follow a stepped wall. Measuring the whole area helps establish how the panels and posts will meet at these points.

Decorative Details

The shape of the bars, top rail and ornamental details affects how the finished railings look. We can work from reference images or develop the details with you.

Existing Metalwork

If you are keeping some original railings, we can discuss how new sections might sit alongside them. We also assess traditional and heritage metalwork for repair and refurbishment.

Access and Installation

We plan delivery and fitting around the property. Let us know about restricted access, occupied areas or other building work so the installation arrangements can be considered early.

What to Expect

How It Works

We take your project from the initial site visit through workshop fabrication to fitting the finished railings.

  1. Design and Site Visit

We visit the property, take measurements and discuss what you need. Plans and reference photographs help us work through the position and style of the railings.

  2. Planning and Materials

We establish the materials, components and fabrication approach, with the fixing details and finish considered before the metalwork is made.

  3. Fabrication

Your railing sections are handmade in the workshop to the agreed design and dimensions.

  4. Treatment and Finishing

The metalwork receives the specified treatment and finish, such as galvanising, powder coating or hand painting.

  5. Delivery and Installation

We arrange a suitable date to deliver and fit the railings, taking account of the site and the agreed installation details.

“I have found him easy to work with, reliable and honest. It goes without saying that the work is really high-end and always of the best standard.”

Common Questions

Metal Railing FAQs

Useful information if you are planning new railings or looking at existing metalwork that needs attention.

How much do bespoke metal railings cost?

The cost depends on the length and height of the run, the design, the material and finish, and the fitting requirements. Decorative details and changes in level also affect the fabrication work. Send us photographs and approximate dimensions so we can discuss the project and arrange an assessment.

Can you match existing railings?

We can discuss a design that complements your existing metalwork. Clear photographs of the full run and close-ups of the bars, posts and decorative details are helpful. A site visit allows us to look more closely at the dimensions and how new sections could be fitted.

Can railings be fitted on top of a wall?

Yes, wall-top railings are part of our work. The proposed wall needs to be assessed as part of the project so the fixing arrangement suits the structure. Send us photographs of the wall, including its top and any piers, when you enquire.

Do you repair or refurbish old railings?

We carry out repairs and refurbishment of traditional and heritage metalwork. The options depend on its condition and how much original material can be retained. Send photographs of the railings and any damaged areas so we can discuss an assessment.
