Metal Staircases Designed for Your Property
Weld It designs, fabricates and installs bespoke metal staircases for homes and commercial properties across Hampshire, Wiltshire and the South of England. We make interior and exterior stairs for new buildings and existing properties, including replacement staircases and access steps.
You work directly with your fabricator from the first design discussion through to installation. Bring your plans or photographs, or talk us through what you need. We can help develop a design around the available space and how the staircase will be used.
Interior and Exterior Metal Staircases
A staircase might be a prominent feature in your home or a practical route between floors at work. We design the metalwork to suit its setting and purpose.
Interior Staircases
Bespoke staircases for rooms, hallways and internal connections between levels. The layout and visible metalwork can be developed to suit a modern interior or the character of an older property.
Exterior Staircases
Metal staircases for outside access between levels, including upper-floor entrances. We consider the exposed location when discussing the tread design, protective finish and supporting metalwork.
Commercial Staircases
Practical staircases for business premises, designed around the building and its use. Access arrangements and the project specification are considered from the outset.
Metal Steps
Short flights of steps for entrances and changes in level. We can discuss the dimensions, available space and handrails needed for the proposed location.
Balustrades and Handrails
Made-to-measure balustrades and handrails to accompany your staircase. Simple or decorative metalwork can be designed to complement the stairs and surrounding features.
Replacement Staircases
If an existing staircase needs replacing, we can visit to assess the space and discuss a new design. Photographs of the current stairs and their connections to the building are a useful starting point.

Discuss Your StaircaseMaterials and Finishes
We work with a range of metals and discuss the specification with you during design. The location of the staircase, its appearance and the maintenance it will need all help guide the choice.
Mild Steel
Mild steel offers flexibility for fabricated stair structures and decorative details. We can discuss the sections and finish needed to achieve the proposed design.
Fabricated structuresStainless Steel
Stainless steel may suit exposed details such as handrails where a metallic finish is wanted. Its suitability and specification depend on the setting and the rest of the staircase design.
Metallic finishGalvanising
For exterior steelwork, galvanising is one of the protective treatments we can discuss. The finish specification should account for weather exposure and the intended appearance.
Exterior protectionPaint and Powder Coating
Powder coating and hand painting provide options for the colour of the finished metalwork. We discuss surface preparation and treatment alongside the colour choice.
Colour and finishPlanning Your Staircase
The layout needs to work with the building as well as the way people move through it. These are some of the details we consider with you before fabrication.
Layout and Available Space
The height between levels, space at the top and bottom, and headroom all affect the layout. We look at the surrounding doors and routes through the property when discussing the position of the stairs.
Treads and Everyday Use
The tread design needs to suit the location and use of the staircase. For exterior steps, exposure to rain and the way water clears the walking surface are useful points to address early.
Handrails and Balustrades
Handrails and balustrades form part of the overall design. We consider their position and detailing alongside the stairs, so they work together visually and in everyday use.
Connections to the Building
The staircase needs suitable support and fixing points. Existing drawings and any structural design information help establish how the new metalwork will connect to the property.
Existing and Period Properties
A replacement staircase or new metalwork in an older building needs to fit its surroundings. We can discuss proportions and detailing that relate to the existing architecture.
Delivery and Site Access
The route into the property affects how sections can be delivered and fitted. Let us know about restricted access or occupied areas so installation can be planned around the site.
How It Works
Our staircase projects follow five stages, from assessing the space to installing the finished metalwork.
-
Design and Site Visit
We visit the property, take measurements and discuss the layout with you. We review any plans and the requirements that need to be addressed in the design.
-
Planning and Materials
We work through the materials, components and fabrication approach, with the finish and installation details considered before work begins.
-
Fabrication
The staircase components are fabricated in the workshop to the agreed design and dimensions.
-
Treatment and Finishing
The metalwork receives the agreed treatment and finish, such as galvanising, powder coating or hand painting.
-
Delivery and Installation
We arrange a suitable date to deliver and fit the staircase, taking account of site access and the agreed installation arrangements.
Metal Staircase FAQs
A few useful starting points if you are considering a new or replacement metal staircase.
How much does a bespoke metal staircase cost?
The price depends on the size and layout, the material and finish, and the details of the treads, handrails and balustrades. Site access and fitting requirements also affect the work involved. Send us the location, photographs and any drawings you have so we can discuss the project and arrange an assessment.
Can you work from plans or reference photographs?
Yes. We can review site plans and discuss reference photographs with you. A photograph helps explain the style you like, while drawings and a site visit help establish what will fit the property. You can also come to us at an earlier stage to develop your ideas.
Do you make both indoor and outdoor staircases?
Yes. We design, fabricate and install interior and exterior metal staircases and steps for domestic and commercial properties. Materials and finishes are discussed for the location, with outdoor exposure considered as part of the specification.
Can you replace an existing metal staircase?
Yes. We can assess the existing arrangement and discuss a replacement staircase for the space. It helps to see photographs of the whole flight, the top and bottom connections, and the access around it. We can then discuss the layout and fitting requirements during a site visit.
